RETROSPECTIVE: OUR YEAR 2020 IN 7 STRIKING EVENTS

COVID-19 prevention, the Beirut blast, Venezuelan refugees in Colombia, vaccinations in the DRC, healthcare in Ukraine and Yemen but also 40 years’ presence in Afghanistan… So many striking events that shaped this peculiar year which, however, did not succeed in weakening the engagement of Première Urgence Internationale’s teams.

Kasai : Strengthening food security in the Democratic Republic of Congo

In Kasai, a province in south-central DRC, bordering Angola, structural food security problems persist despite the end of the conflict in the province in 2016. Première Urgence Internationale carried out an agricultural revival and food assistance project there for twenty-four months. Nearly 166,000 people benefited from the project’s activities in the locality of Lunyeka (Kamuesha health zone).

Burkina Faso: assistance to the population affected by violence

With 20 million inhabitants and a surface about half the size of France, Burkina Faso is facing a major humanitarian and security crisis because of the regional instability that takes place in Sahel. This crisis has caused the displacement of more than one million people today (5% of the population) which is equivalent to three million people, compared to a country like France. Première Urgence Internationale brings assistance to the populations in Burkina Faso.

In Cameroon, “school brigades” formed to promote hygiene in schools

For the past two years, Première Urgence Internationale has been carrying out awareness-raising activities on water, hygiene and sanitation in 11 schools in Cameroon. In 2018 and 2019, 7,740 children and 180 teachers and parents benefited from awareness-raising programmes in newly equipped and sanitised schools.

COVID-19: In Libya, Première Urgence Internationale maintains its health activities

Libya recorded its first case of COVID-19 on March 24, 2020, since then there are 4,063  confirmed cases and 93 deaths (according to the National Centre for Disease Control – NCDC – data as of August 4, 2020). Since the start of the pandemic, the Première Urgence Internationale teams have decided to maintain their health activities to meet the needs of the vulnerable population and to include a COVID-19 component to limit the spread of the virus in the two areas of Benghazi and Al Kufra where the NGO operates.

Indeed, the already fragile health system before the outbreak of COVID-19, fears a real threat for the country, in case the virus will spread throughout the country.
