What is
nutrition?

Malnutrition is defined as an imbalance between nutrient intake and the body’s needs. In a broad sense, it refers to both undernutrition (dietary deficiency) and overnutrition (unbalanced diet with excessive caloric intake in relation to energy requirements, with or without sufficient intake of nutrient-rich foods).

Première Urgence Internationale objectives

Première Urgence Internationale’s main objective is to help improve the health and nutritional status of a target community and reduce infant and child mortality.

To achieve this, our field teams pay particular attention to the prevention, detection and treatment of acute malnutrition in children under 5 and pregnant and breast-feeding women.

Nutrition-related activities are included in our primary healthcare support programs, and are implemented at health facility level through mobile teams, but also at community level.

At Première Urgence Internationale, the management of actue malnutrition includes several components:

  • Community outreach to encourage community participation, early detection, referral of acute malnutrition cases and follow-up of problem cases;
  • The management of severe acute malnutrition in the care of children aged 6-59 months with no medical complications;
  • The management of severe acute malnutrition in the care of hospitalized children aged 6-59 months with medical complications and hospitalized acutely malnourished children aged less than 6 months;
  • Outpatient management of moderate acute malnutrition for children aged 6 to 59 months.
