Since 2021, Senegal has been experiencing major political upheaval, following the arrest of Ousmane Sonko, president of the PASTEF opposition party and principal opponent of President Macky Sall. His arrest in June 2023 sparked off a series of violent demonstrations, resulting in over 350 injuries, 29 deaths in Dakar and Ziguinchor, and more than 500 arrests.
The demonstrations had a direct impact on the economy. In June 2023, the closure of certain banks led to a shortage of banknotes in ATMs; the Internet was intermittently cut off; and shipping and bus services were interrupted.
Since 2012, Première Urgence Internationale has been supporting the Maison Médicale de Wassadou (MMW) located in the Tambacounda region, in the south-east of the country. Created in 2005 on the initiative of the Senegalese association Kinkeliba, and thanks to the support of the Pierre Fabre Foundation, in a remote and underdeveloped area, the MMW gives surrounding populations access to quality healthcare.
Première Urgence Internationale’s support is twofold. On a technical level, it helps to improve the quality of the medical services delivered; on an organizational and economic level, it encourages the strengthening of the structure’s model, its gradual autonomization and its long-term viability.
